It is all too often that we take our sensitive and sometimes personal data for granted. Too many of us do not back up our most important files. Today I’m going to share with you some good ways of backing up the things you want to keep safe in the event of a hard drive failure.
1. Buy a Back Up Hard Drive
Buying and installing a new hard drive is easy, in my previous post I have written a detailed how-to for this process. By copying your files to a separate hard drive you eliminate the risk of one of them going bad and leaving you with nothing. For example, if your operating system was corrupted and you needed to wipe your partition clean to reinstall it, a backup on another drive or partition would be unaffected.
2. Burn Your Files to a DVD/CD
By burning your files to a separate read-only medium, you will have unaffected copies of them in the case that your computer itself is destroyed or damaged.
3. Copy Your Files to an USB Drive
This method of coarse has the advantage of being an external medium, safe from harm when your computer is destroyed and also has the ability to be added to when you need to create a new backup. With solid state storage and the durability that comes with most newer USB drives, your data is perhaps safer on a USB drive as opposed to being on DVD’s or CD’s.
4. Upload Your Files to an Online Server
An online server would be accessible from anywhere. Some companies will even warranty your data against natural disasters or the sort. The advantage here of course is professional storage, as they want their data to be extra safe, so your data will be just as safe as theirs. Your data is kept most likely in a different part of the country or even a different part of the world. Regardless, you will be still able to access all your files from wherever you are and whenever you want to. On a side note, some web hosts do not allow their clients to use their servers for backup purposes, so make sure to always read the “Terms of Serive” when signing up for a service.
