Microsoft has monopolized personal and professional computing with their operating systems since the release of Windows 95. Linux, a formidable alternative, has been gradually taking ground in the professional and personal computer market; however, it has been met with mixed opinions due to a widespread lack of popularity and open-minded end-users. Here are five of the top reasons to use Linux in place of Windows operating systems.
1. Versatility
Linux can be run on just about any types of hardware on any architecture. It has been used as an operating system on even various non-computer hardware, such as the Sony PS2, the XBOX and XBOX 360, the Nintendo DS, and many other hand held devices, including PDA’s and even some cell phones. Linux can take full advantage of the latest hardware out of the box in most cases. Got an old piece of hardware collecting dust on a shelf somewhere? No problem; Linux can run on the oldest and least advanced hardware as well.
2. Ongoing Development
The Linux kernel is updated frequently, as are most Linux programs. Bugs and problems found in any particular program are phased out in short time. No waiting for large service pack updates to fix small problems.
3. Security
Linux was created with security in mind right from the beginning. Compared to the windows operating systems, there are virtually no critical security vulnerabilities in the Linux operating system. Linux users generally do not have any need for anti-spyware and anti-virus software; whereas the masses of windows users find it necessary to install and use multiple anti-virus and anti-spyware programs simultaneously.
4. Performance
In the Linux world, multiple processor support comes fully implemented out of the box. No upgrades required to enjoy the extra performance of a second or fourth processor.
5. Freedom
Linux is openly available to the masses for no charge. Although you can purchase support packages for some Linux distributions, the majority of Linux distributions and Linux compatible programs are free and openly distributed to the general public.
Linux may not be the right operating system for everyone, but it still deserves a fair representation in a world dominated by Microsoft’s operating systems.
