What Is Minimal Techno?

April 11th, 2008 · No Comments

As of late I have been obsessed with minimal techno music. The obsession started with my first listening of The Horrorist and Miro Pajic collaboration track entitled “I/O” (Which stands for “Input / Output”). At first I didn’t really dig the sound of it, but as the track advanced and started to flesh out, it completely grew on me. In fact, it’s actually one of my favorite songs at the moment.

“So what is minimal techno?”, you might ask. Well, to explain it in the simplest terms, it’s the music of the future! Usually every track is filled with atonal bleeps and bloops, random, shuffling clicks and clacks, and unexpected white noise booms. To put it in another way, it’s the danceable cousin of glitch music. If this still doesn’t say much to you, check out the Wikipedia article which explains this rather new musical genre in great detail.

The only thing that I personally don’t like about this genre is that it seems like most tracks sound very similar to each other. If someone would make me listen to ten random minimal tracks, told me to remember each song’s title, and then at the end asked me to identify most of them, I wouldn’t be able to do it. The main reason for this is that most songs lack of any type of chord progression, interesting melodies, and in most cases, even distinguishable vocals. Regardless, this type of music isn’t about rocking out or singing along, but about listening to interesting sounds, and most importantly, dancing to a steady beat!

Do you like minimal techno, and if so, do you have any favorite producers?
